Overview

What is Jira?

Jira is the default project tracker of the software industry, and South Africa's dev shops, fintechs and corporate IT departments are no exception. Scrum and kanban boards, backlogs, sprints, story points, epics and roadmaps are first class citizens, and the workflow engine underneath can model any process a delivery manager can draw, which is both its power and its reputation.

The cloud pricing is friendly at the entry: free for up to ten users, then Standard at about 8.60 dollars per user per month, roughly R160, with Premium near R310 adding advanced roadmaps, unlimited storage and 24x7 support. Boards connect natively to the rest of the Atlassian stack, Confluence for documents and Bitbucket for code, and the marketplace carries thousands of apps for everything from test management to time tracking billed in rand unfriendly dollars.

Jira rewards teams that run real agile ceremonies and punishes those that configure first and think later: workflow sprawl is a genuine disease, and non technical departments often find the vocabulary alien. Performance on the cloud has improved measurably in recent years and the automation engine saves real admin time once learned. For an SA software team of any seriousness the question is rarely whether Jira, but how much Jira, and the free tier makes starting small painless.

Doing the job for us in Vanderbijlpark

Epics roll into roadmaps the stakeholders actually open. The marketplace has an app for every gap we found. Automation rules trimmed our standup admin to nothing. Our delivery grew up when our tooling did.

Pros

JQL answers any delivery question; velocity and sprint metrics

Cons

Marketplace costs stack per user

Gets us there, with some detours

Great for engineering, a translation project for everyone else. Reporting beyond agile metrics needs apps or exports.

Pros

Velocity and sprint metrics; roadmaps stakeholders read

Cons

Alien vocabulary for non dev teams
