Overview
FreeAgent is one of the most loved small business accounting products in the United Kingdom, and it earns that affection with an interface that makes bookkeeping feel almost friendly. Invoicing, expenses, projects, time tracking and a running view of tax owed are all wrapped in a design that non accountants genuinely understand. It is built squarely for UK rules: UK VAT returns file directly to HMRC under Making Tax Digital, self assessment figures accumulate through the year, and corporation tax estimates update as you work.
Why review it for a South African audience? Because a meaningful slice of SA freelancers, contractors and outsourcing firms bill UK clients, own UK limited companies or do the books for UK entities from Cape Town and Johannesburg back offices. For that work FreeAgent is close to ideal: pound invoicing with automatic payment reminders, UK bank feeds into the books, and the tax timeline handled properly. It is not the tool for a business that needs SARS VAT201 returns and rand books, and it does not pretend to be.
Pricing is in pounds: sole trader plans from 19 pounds plus VAT per month, about R450, and limited company plans at 33 pounds, about R780, with half price introductory periods that run for six months. UK businesses banking with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank or Mettle get FreeAgent completely free, which many SA owned UK companies use to their advantage. Support is by email and phone from a UK team with a reputation among the best in the industry.

Great at its job, its job is smaller than some expect. There is no SARS anything, this is UK tax software full stop. The pound subscription costs real rand when the exchange rate runs.
Pros
Projects with time and cost tracking; automatic invoice reminders that work
Cons
Reporting stays deliberately shallow

The dashboard shows profit, tax owed and cash in one honest screen. Mileage and out of pocket expenses stopped leaking through the cracks. Payroll for my one UK employee runs inside the same product.

Great at its job, its job is smaller than some expect. The API is decent but the integration catalogue is thin next to the big names. Stock is not a concept here, service businesses only.
Pros
Tax timeline shows every deadline ahead
Cons
No inventory at all
