Mostly happy in Boksburg, a few gripes

Does everything we need at the office. Away from the office is another story. Rebuild functions fix data issues but the fact you need them says something.

Pros

Utterly reliable core ledger

Cons

No real mobile story

Happy customer in eMalahleni

The thing about Pastel is that every accountant in the country can work in it. Training a new clerk takes days because half the candidates already know it.

Every bookkeeper in Knysna knows this system

Good software wrapped in a 2010 experience. Multi user on a network needs proper IT support or you will have odd errors. Multi company support means our two entities live side by side cleanly.

Cons

Upgrades between versions can be fiddly

Working well for our 6 person team

I learned Pastel at varsity and walked into my first job already productive. It handles our point of sale till at the front and the ledger at the back. The install base alone makes it the sensible choice here.

Pros

Ageing reports are excellent; vAT reporting aligned with SARS

Cons

Learning curve for staff used to cloud tools

Let us down when it counted

Moving off it was a project, but staying was becoming one too. Our consultant charges by the hour and the odd errors kept him busy.

Cons

Consultant costs to fix recurring errors add up

Mostly happy in Benoni, a few gripes

After 2 years I know every corner of it, including the frustrating ones. The interface has not meaningfully changed in a decade. Processing speed on a local machine beats waiting for a browser every time.

Cons

Upgrades between versions can be fiddly

Handles our 18 companies without blinking

There is a Pastel consultant ten minutes from us and that changes everything. You can drill from any report straight down to the source document. It will outlast half the cloud startups people keep pitching me.

Cons

Needs proper IT support on a network

Desktop reliability that cloud products still cannot match

It is not glamorous but the trial balance is right every single month. The forms designer let us match our invoices to our letterhead exactly.

Cons

Occasional data errors need rebuilds

Stock, invoicing and VAT all under control

The cash book module alone saves my clerk hours every week. Multi company support means our two entities live side by side cleanly. It handles our point of sale till at the front and the ledger at the back.

Pros

Batch processing suits real accounts teams

Cons

Backups are entirely your responsibility

Pastel has run our books for 4 years straight

It is dependable to a fault and dated to a fault. New staff who trained on cloud tools find the learning curve real. The install base means any problem you hit, someone within driving distance has solved it before.

Pros

Decades of proven stability

Cons

Emailing documents feels clunky

Good decision for a 70 person company

There is a Pastel consultant ten minutes from us and that changes everything. Support through our local business partner is a phone call, not a ticket queue. The Intelligence reporting module turns the ledger into proper management packs.

Pros

Point of sale option for the front counter

Pastel does the accounting properly, it just makes you work for it sometimes. Support through our local business partner is a phone call, not a ticket queue.

Cons

Emailing documents feels clunky
