Operations Manager · Boksburg Supplies Services

23 July 2025

Retail · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Mostly happy in East London, a few gripes

The engine is strong, the ownership costs are real. Credit control workflows chase debtors before humans remember to.

Pros

One ledger across every module; natural upgrade path from Pastel

Healthcare · 51–200 employees Namibia Used for 2+ years

Our Ballito office gave up on it

The product may be fine, our implementation certainly was not. A version upgrade broke our custom reports and rebuilding them cost real money. We needed a DBA on retainer just to keep the system responsive.

Pros

Sage Intelligence for exec reporting

Cons

Simple changes always need paid consulting

Food & Beverage · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Multi warehouse stock finally under control

Fixed assets, job costing and CRM in the same database ended our spreadsheet farm. The partner channel means you are never more than a phone call from help. User security is granular down to the field level where we need it. It is the system our business grew up on and grew into.

Pros

Strong job costing and BOM functionality

Cons

Custom reports need SQL skills or partner hours

Good decision for a 60 person company

After 4 years the system still handles our growing transaction volumes fine. Credit control workflows chase debtors before humans remember to. It runs the business so we can run the business.

Logistics · 201–500 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Frustrating experience for our 220 person team

Our partner oversold and under delivered, and Sage points back at the partner. Simple changes need consultant hours, nothing is ever just a setting.

Cons

Go live overruns came out of our pocket

Good decision for a 110 person company

Our reseller in Stellenbosch knows our setup personally, that relationship is gold. Approval workflows in procurement stopped orders nobody authorised. The upgrade path from Pastel preserved our history, nothing was lost. Local product, local support, proper depth. Recommended.

Pros

Cons

Needs proper server infrastructure

Retail · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Grew from 5 users to 30 without changing systems

The engine is strong, the ownership costs are real. The screens work but graduates raised on cloud software find them foreign. Serial number tracking sorted our warranty claims process completely.

Pros

One ledger across every module

Needs proper server infrastructure

evolution has been our backbone for 10 years

It does what we need, though rarely in a modern looking way. Performance needs tuning once the database grows past a few years of history. Sage Intelligence gives the exco their monthly pack straight from the ledger.

Pros

Handles growing transaction volumes

Cons

Training costs add up per module

Solid choice for our Umhlanga business

Our distribution business runs 420 users across three branches on it daily. The SQL foundation means our BI tool reads live data straight from the source. Serial number tracking sorted our warranty claims process completely. Pick a good business partner and the product will not let you down.

12 December 2025

Retail · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Decent fit for a 180 person company

A capable ERP that gives back exactly what you put into the implementation. Some modules like CRM feel like an afterthought next to the financial core. Licensing changes over the years have made cost planning harder.

Pros

Sage Intelligence for exec reporting

Cons

Consulting costs are part of ownership

A quiet workhorse for 3 years now

Our distribution business runs 14 users across three branches on it daily. User security is granular down to the field level where we need it. For SA mid market businesses this is the sensible ERP conversation to have.

Cons

Needs proper server infrastructure

Local ERP that understands SARS

After 2 years we know its strengths and we budget for its weaknesses. Upgrades between versions are mini projects with consulting hours attached.

Group Accountant · Ballito Packaging Solutions

15 July 2024

Customisations broke at every upgrade

Month end got slower every quarter until we intervened at the database level. Support tickets bounce between the partner and Sage while the branch waits. We needed a DBA on retainer just to keep the system responsive.

Pros

Granular user security

Cons

Upgrades broke customisations repeatedly

Job costing changed how we price contracts, we finally see true margin per job. Every module posts to one general ledger so the numbers always agree. Approval workflows in procurement stopped orders nobody authorised.

Pros

Sage Intelligence for exec reporting
