Accounting · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

The bank file goes to Standard Bank and everyone gets paid

A good product that Sage clearly wants you to outgrow. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way. Backups are quick and restoring a period to check history actually works.

Cons

Custom reports take patience

Solid choice for our Ballito business

February used to mean overtime for me, now the EMP501 recon is days not weeks. Every SARS code change over the years has arrived on time in an update. The tax certificate run at year end is genuinely a few clicks.

Solid choice for our Durban business

I am not a payroll specialist by training and I manage fine. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place.

Pros

UIF declarations generated automatically

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

trusted it for years and it keeps delivering

We run weekly wages for the factory floor and monthly for the office, both smooth. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

Pros

Bulk increases are quick; discount when bundled with Pastel accounting

Cons

Dated desktop interface

Doing okay for our 18 person setup

The engine is right, the experience around it is dated. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers. Custom reports beyond the standard set need more patience than they should.

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

The licence jump between tiers is steep

The cloud alternatives do the same job with none of this ceremony. A reinstall mid month meant recapturing a week of changes from paper.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable

Cons

Registration and licensing admin wastes days. Feels like a legacy product at premium pricing

Frustrating experience for our 220 person team

Support used to know payroll deeply, now I get script readers. We paid consultant hours just to apply the annual update correctly.

Cons

Support cannot resolve its own error messages

Never missed a payday in 4 years

After 4 years I have made peace with its quirks. Support in tax season means long waits, plan your questions early.

Pros

UIF declarations generated automatically

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Serving our Paarl operation well

The e@syFile export works first time, every time, which is more than I can say for e@syFile itself. The 20 percent discount for having Pastel accounting made the renewal easier to swallow.

Pros

UIF declarations generated automatically

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Fine for payroll, reporting could be friendlier

We trust the numbers completely, the workflow less so. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way.

Pros

IRP5 and IT3a certificates in a few clicks; handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

The bank file goes to Capitec and everyone gets paid

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff
