Payroll Administrator

22 April 2026

Wholesale · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

From weekly wages to monthly salaries, all covered

We run weekly wages for the factory floor and monthly for the office, both smooth. Backups are quick and restoring a period to check history actually works. EMP201 figures come straight off a report, I capture them on eFiling and I am done. My successor will inherit it and thank me.

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Good decision for a 180 person company

I have processed payroll on this since before some of my staff finished school. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place. Ten years from now it will probably still be running our wages.

Pros

UIF declarations generated automatically; sARS statutory tables always current

Working well for our 8 person team

Our labour consultant audited us and the payroll records came out spotless. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time. Boring in the best possible way.

Pros

GL journals post into Pastel accounting; sARS statutory tables always current

Cons

No employee self service

Accounting · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Working well for our 60 person team

After the SARS penalty scare with our old system we moved here and it has been calm since. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

Pros

IRP5 and IT3a certificates in a few clicks; termination calculations are reliable

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

Doing okay for our 35 person setup

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. Moving between the licence tiers is a bigger price jump than headcount justifies.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs; bulk increases are quick

Cons

No employee self service

Solid choice for a Springs employer

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. New payroll staff need proper training, it does not hold your hand. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled

Mostly happy in Roodepoort, a few gripes

The engine is right, the experience around it is dated. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Solid choice for our Gqeberha business

We run weekly wages for the factory floor and monthly for the office, both smooth. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked. My successor will inherit it and thank me.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs; leave, loans and garnishees all handled

Cons

Annual licence model, no monthly option

Good but not perfect for our Vereeniging team

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable

Cons

No employee self service

Wholesale · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Solid choice for a Somerset West employer

A good product that Sage clearly wants you to outgrow. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure.

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff

A quiet workhorse for 3 years now

Our accountant checks the EMP201 figures monthly and they have never been out. You can rerun and check a payslip before committing, which has saved me twice. If you run payroll in South Africa you already know why people stay on this.

Payroll for 30 staff done by ten in the morning

I am not a payroll specialist by training and I manage fine. Our consultant is one phone call away and knows the product inside out. Would recommend to any SA employer with real payroll complexity.

Decent fit for a 300 person company

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop.

Training needed for new payroll staff

IRP5s for all our staff printed and reconciled in a single afternoon. Loan balances and savings deductions carry forward correctly month after month.

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour.

Reliable desktop payroll with real local support

A good product that Sage clearly wants you to outgrow. Support in tax season means long waits, plan your questions early. UIF declarations generate monthly and the Department has never queried one.
