Natasha Daniels

Admin Manager

12 February 2026

Logistics · 201–500 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Good but not perfect for our Randburg team

Does the statutory heavy lifting well and the everyday conveniences poorly. New payroll staff need proper training, it does not hold your hand. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have.

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff

Healthcare · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Payroll for 55 staff done by ten in the morning

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Exactly what our 220 person business needed

I am not a payroll specialist by training and I manage fine. Staff get paid, SARS gets its numbers, I get my evenings. Recommended.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly

Construction & Trades · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

A quiet workhorse for 2 years now

As the only admin person in a Johannesburg firm, I need payroll that does not fight me. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff; gL journals post into Pastel accounting

Doing the job for us in Johannesburg

We are a seasonal employer, staff numbers double at harvest, and it just handles it. The GL integration posts salary journals into Pastel accounting automatically. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff; handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff

Good but not perfect for our Sandton team

After 2 years I have made peace with its quirks. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way.

Logistics · 201–500 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Payroll for 220 staff done by ten in the morning

As the only admin person in a Somerset West firm, I need payroll that does not fight me. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly; discount when bundled with Pastel accounting

Solid choice for a Kimberley employer

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop.

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

Frustrating experience for our 420 person team

The annual update process finally broke me this year. The February queue for support means your year end problem waits behind everyone else's.

Cons

Support cannot resolve its own error messages

Solid choice for our Polokwane business

I have processed payroll on this since before some of my staff finished school. It caters up to 500 employees on one licence so we have headroom for years.

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

Our accountant in Knysna recommended it, good call

The bank file exports for Capitec and the whole wage run pays out in one go. Loan balances and savings deductions carry forward correctly month after month. My successor will inherit it and thank me.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Decent fit for a 18 person company

A good product that Sage clearly wants you to outgrow. Support in tax season means long waits, plan your questions early. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour.

Pros

EMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile; bulk increases are quick

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Working well for our 14 person team

I am not a payroll specialist by training and I manage fine. Payslips email out to staff automatically, no more envelope stuffing on the 25th. Boring in the best possible way.

Pros

EMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile

South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Mostly happy in Vereeniging, a few gripes

After 2 years I have made peace with its quirks. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers.

Pros

EMP201 figures straight off a report

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Does exactly what a payroll system must do

Leave, loans, garnishees, union deductions, it all fits into the payslip cleanly. Loan balances and savings deductions carry forward correctly month after month.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly; iRP5 and IT3a certificates in a few clicks

Cons

No employee self service

Serving our Potchefstroom operation well

Payday here is sacred and this system has never once made us late. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

Pros

One licence covers up to 500 employees; bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

2 years in and still happy

I have processed payroll on this since before some of my staff finished school. You can rerun and check a payslip before committing, which has saved me twice. For desktop payroll with local backup, this is still the benchmark.

Pros

One licence covers up to 500 employees

Cons

Annual licence model, no monthly option

Fine for now, watching the roadmap

Good dependable payroll that shows its age at every login. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour. The 20 percent discount for having Pastel accounting made the renewal easier to swallow.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff; termination calculations are reliable
