Our accountant in Randburg recommended it, good call

As the only admin person in a Cape Town firm, I need payroll that does not fight me. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked. Payslips email out to staff automatically, no more envelope stuffing on the 25th. The peace of mind is worth more than the price.

Pros

GL journals post into Pastel accounting

Solid choice for a George employer

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. Loan balances and savings deductions carry forward correctly month after month.

Pros

IRP5 and IT3a certificates in a few clicks; handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

Still glad we chose it, 3 years later

After the SARS penalty scare with our old system we moved here and it has been calm since. It caters up to 500 employees on one licence so we have headroom for years.

Pros

IRP5 and IT3a certificates in a few clicks

Happy customer in Bloemfontein

February used to mean overtime for me, now the EMP501 recon is days not weeks. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day.

Pros

Discount when bundled with Pastel accounting

Our payroll lady swears by it

Switched from manual wage books 2 years ago and never looked back. Our consultant is one phone call away and knows the product inside out.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff

Cons

Working well for our 20 person team

February used to mean overtime for me, now the EMP501 recon is days not weeks. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly

Mostly happy in Midrand, a few gripes

The engine is right, the experience around it is dated. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour.

Pros

Bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

Dated desktop interface

Solid choice for a Mossel Bay employer

Good dependable payroll that shows its age at every login. Moving between the licence tiers is a bigger price jump than headcount justifies. The mid year and final recons export to e@syFile without a single validation error.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Mostly happy in Worcester, a few gripes

After 4 years I have made peace with its quirks. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop.

Cons

Accounting · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Decent fit for a 15 person company

Does the statutory heavy lifting well and the everyday conveniences poorly. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour. EMP201 figures come straight off a report, I capture them on eFiling and I am done.

Pros

EMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile; bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it.

Decent fit for a 75 person company

We trust the numbers completely, the workflow less so. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers. Moving between the licence tiers is a bigger price jump than headcount justifies.

Cons

No employee self service

Year end update broke our setup again

For the renewal price I expect far more than this. One corrupt period file cost us a weekend of restores.

Payroll Manager · Knysna Timber Supplies

1 June 2025

South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Good decision for a 110 person company

We are a seasonal employer, staff numbers double at harvest, and it just handles it. The tax certificate run at year end is genuinely a few clicks. Backups are quick and restoring a period to check history actually works. Staff get paid, SARS gets its numbers, I get my evenings. Recommended.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable; payslips email directly to staff
