Mining South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Solid choice for our eMalahleni business

Setup took our consultant one morning and it has run like a clock for 2 years. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time. You can rerun and check a payslip before committing, which has saved me twice.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff; termination calculations are reliable

We moved to cloud payroll and the relief is real

We sat without working payroll for three days in July and support could not help.

Pros

UIF declarations generated automatically

Cons

Updates have broken working setups

Our accountant in Pietermaritzburg recommended it, good call

Our labour consultant audited us and the payroll records came out spotless. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Pros

SARS statutory tables always current

Construction · 201–500 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Decent fit for a 350 person company

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way.

Pros

SARS statutory tables always current; uIF declarations generated automatically

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

Accounting South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Good but not perfect for our Mossel Bay team

It works, but every year I ask myself if this is the year we go cloud. Moving between the licence tiers is a bigger price jump than headcount justifies. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Pros

Strong consultant network countrywide; bulk increases are quick

Cons

Annual licence model, no monthly option

Good decision for a 12 person company

As the only admin person in an eMalahleni firm, I need payroll that does not fight me. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place.

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff

The bank file goes to Absa and everyone gets paid

IRP5s for all our staff printed and reconciled in a single afternoon. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure.

Payroll for 40 staff done by ten in the morning

It works, but every year I ask myself if this is the year we go cloud. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time.

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff

Leave, loans, garnishees, union deductions, it all fits into the payslip cleanly. My successor will inherit it and thank me.

Pros

Cons

Serving our Gqeberha operation well

As the only admin person in a Benoni firm, I need payroll that does not fight me. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked. The peace of mind is worth more than the price.

Pros

Discount when bundled with Pastel accounting

Cons

Solid choice for our Upington business

Setup took our consultant one morning and it has run like a clock for 7 years. You can rerun and check a payslip before committing, which has saved me twice. The GL integration posts salary journals into Pastel accounting automatically.

Pros

EMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile

Retail · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Decent fit for a 4 person company

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have. The mid year and final recons export to e@syFile without a single validation error.

Cons

Dated desktop interface

Doing okay for our 110 person setup

A good product that Sage clearly wants you to outgrow. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop. EMP201 figures come straight off a report, I capture them on eFiling and I am done.

Pros

SARS statutory tables always current

Good product, year end update is a ritual

The engine is right, the experience around it is dated. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs; sARS statutory tables always current

Cons

Custom reports take patience

Support queue in February is a nightmare

We sat without working payroll for three days in June and support could not help. Licence reactivation after a hardware change took days of back and forth.

Cons

Feels like a legacy product at premium pricing. Registration and licensing admin wastes days

Mostly happy in Stellenbosch, a few gripes

Does the statutory heavy lifting well and the everyday conveniences poorly. Support in tax season means long waits, plan your questions early.

Pros

Working well for our 350 person team

Our practice runs payroll for 8 clients on it and the routine never breaks. The tax certificate run at year end is genuinely a few clicks. Boring in the best possible way.

Our accountant in Gqeberha recommended it, good call

Our accountant checks the EMP201 figures monthly and they have never been out. EMP201 figures come straight off a report, I capture them on eFiling and I am done. The peace of mind is worth more than the price.
