Happy customer in Cape Town

We are a seasonal employer, staff numbers double at harvest, and it just handles it. Backups are quick and restoring a period to check history actually works. The tax certificate run at year end is genuinely a few clicks. Payroll is the one thing you cannot get wrong and this gets it right.

Cons

Licence tier jumps are steep

Serving our Boksburg operation well

Our practice runs payroll for 18 clients on it and the routine never breaks. The GL integration posts salary journals into Pastel accounting automatically. Payroll is the one thing you cannot get wrong and this gets it right.

Our accountant in Boksburg recommended it, good call

Our labour consultant audited us and the payroll records came out spotless. The GL integration posts salary journals into Pastel accounting automatically. Staff get paid, SARS gets its numbers, I get my evenings. Recommended.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff; bulk increases are quick

Been running our payroll on it for 5 years

We run weekly wages for the factory floor and monthly for the office, both smooth. Loan balances and savings deductions carry forward correctly month after month. The peace of mind is worth more than the price.

Pros

One licence covers up to 500 employees

Cons

No employee self service

Payroll for 110 staff done by ten in the morning

A good product that Sage clearly wants you to outgrow. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour. Loan balances and savings deductions carry forward correctly month after month.

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Mostly happy in eMalahleni, a few gripes

We trust the numbers completely, the workflow less so. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop.

Pros

UIF declarations generated automatically

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Priced like premium, feels like legacy

Support used to know payroll deeply, now I get script readers. A reinstall mid month meant recapturing a week of changes from paper.

Cons

Feels like a legacy product at premium pricing. Recovery from data issues is slow and stressful

Doing okay for our 40 person setup

We trust the numbers completely, the workflow less so. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day.

Pros

Strong consultant network countrywide

Cons

Annual licence model, no monthly option

Still glad we chose it, 4 years later

IRP5s for all our staff printed and reconciled in a single afternoon. Our consultant is one phone call away and knows the product inside out. Payroll is the one thing you cannot get wrong and this gets it right.

Doing the job for us in Umhlanga

The bank file exports for FNB and the whole wage run pays out in one go. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

IRP5 and IT3a certificates in a few clicks

Feels abandoned next to the cloud products

The annual update process finally broke me this year. A reinstall mid month meant recapturing a week of changes from paper. We paid consultant hours just to apply the annual update correctly.

Cons

Updates have broken working setups

Payslips out on time, every time

We pay 15 staff across two branches and the run takes under an hour. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place. Backups are quick and restoring a period to check history actually works.

Mixed feelings after 4 years

It works, but every year I ask myself if this is the year we go cloud. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

Decent fit for a 420 person company

After 2 years I have made peace with its quirks. Support in tax season means long waits, plan your questions early. It caters up to 500 employees on one licence so we have headroom for years.

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Working well for our 30 person team

I have processed payroll on this since before some of my staff finished school. UIF declarations generate monthly and the Department has never queried one. Every SARS code change over the years has arrived on time in an update.
