Payroll Manager · Benoni Foods

18 January 2026

Food & Beverage · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Good decision for a 60 person company

I am not a payroll specialist by training and I manage fine. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place. Staff get paid, SARS gets its numbers, I get my evenings. Recommended.

Mining South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Four stars, the annual update process costs it the fifth

The engine is right, the experience around it is dated. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly; bank files for all the major SA banks

Reliable payroll behind a dated screen

Good dependable payroll that shows its age at every login. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way.

Cons

Annual licence model, no monthly option

Been running our payroll on it for 3 years

The e@syFile export works first time, every time, which is more than I can say for e@syFile itself. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place. Boring in the best possible way.

Pros

One licence covers up to 500 employees

Cons

Licence tier jumps are steep

Healthcare · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Payroll for 180 staff done by ten in the morning

Good dependable payroll that shows its age at every login. Moving between the licence tiers is a bigger price jump than headcount justifies. Payslips email out to staff automatically, no more envelope stuffing on the 25th.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

The annual licence pays for itself in February

The bank file exports for Capitec and the whole wage run pays out in one go. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Solid choice for a Pietermaritzburg employer

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place.

Pros

Discount when bundled with Pastel accounting; strong consultant network countrywide

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

Doing the job for us in Polokwane

As the only admin person in a Johannesburg firm, I need payroll that does not fight me. Our consultant is one phone call away and knows the product inside out. The 20 percent discount for having Pastel accounting made the renewal easier to swallow. Staff get paid, SARS gets its numbers, I get my evenings. Recommended.

Good decision for a 7 person company

Payday here is sacred and this system has never once made us late. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time. My successor will inherit it and thank me.

Accounting · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Solid choice for a Boksburg employer

We pay 80 staff across two branches and the run takes under an hour. It caters up to 500 employees on one licence so we have headroom for years. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff

Month end payroll takes me an hour now

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. New payroll staff need proper training, it does not hold your hand. Every SARS code change over the years has arrived on time in an update.

Our accountant in Umhlanga recommended it, good call

I have processed payroll on this since before some of my staff finished school. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked. Payroll is the one thing you cannot get wrong and this gets it right.

Pros

Payslips email directly to staff

Cons

No employee self service

Still glad we chose it, 8 years later

After the SARS penalty scare with our old system we moved here and it has been calm since.

Pros

Discount when bundled with Pastel accounting

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Reinstalls and registration codes, every single year

We sat without working payroll for three days in September and support could not help. A reinstall mid month meant recapturing a week of changes from paper. We paid consultant hours just to apply the annual update correctly.

Cons

Registration and licensing admin wastes days

Update instructions assume you are an IT person

Support used to know payroll deeply, now I get script readers. The export to e@syFile failed with vague errors that support could not decode.

Cons

Consultant fees to stay operational add up

Gets salaries right, gets in its own way sometimes

We trust the numbers completely, the workflow less so. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable

Wage Clerk · Centurion Catering Studio

Hospitality South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Mostly happy in Klerksdorp, a few gripes

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. The tax certificate run at year end is genuinely a few clicks.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

Retail · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Happy customer in East London

The bank file exports for FNB and the whole wage run pays out in one go. You can rerun and check a payslip before committing, which has saved me twice. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day.

Pros

Bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

Dated desktop interface
