Construction · 51–200 employees Botswana Used for 2+ years

Disappointed after 3 years

Support used to know payroll deeply, now I get script readers. The February queue for support means your year end problem waits behind everyone else's.

Cons

Recovery from data issues is slow and stressful

Serving our Knysna operation well

IRP5s for all our staff printed and reconciled in a single afternoon. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure. The tax certificate run at year end is genuinely a few clicks. The peace of mind is worth more than the price.

Pros

EMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile

Cons

Custom reports take patience

South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Been running our payroll on it for 2 years

Switched from manual wage books 2 years ago and never looked back. UIF declarations generate monthly and the Department has never queried one.

Pros

EMP201 figures straight off a report

Cons

Licence tier jumps are steep

Accounting South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Payroll for 12 staff done by ten in the morning

After the SARS penalty scare with our old system we moved here and it has been calm since. The GL integration posts salary journals into Pastel accounting automatically. The tax certificate run at year end is genuinely a few clicks. Boring in the best possible way.

Pros

Bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Solid choice for a Vanderbijlpark employer

The engine is right, the experience around it is dated. Support in tax season means long waits, plan your questions early. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day.

Cons

Dated desktop interface

Agriculture · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Been running our payroll on it for 7 years

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. New payroll staff need proper training, it does not hold your hand. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled

Cons

Dated desktop interface

Does the job, feels its age

A good product that Sage clearly wants you to outgrow. Moving between the licence tiers is a bigger price jump than headcount justifies.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff

Doing okay for our 70 person setup

It works, but every year I ask myself if this is the year we go cloud. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way.

Pros

IRP5 and IT3a certificates in a few clicks; handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs

Cons

Licence tier jumps are steep

Our auditors have zero payroll findings

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs; eMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile

Gets us there, with some detours

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it. Support in tax season means long waits, plan your questions early. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure.

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Decent fit for a 7 person company

Does the statutory heavy lifting well and the everyday conveniences poorly. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

We trust the numbers completely, the workflow less so. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour. New payroll staff need proper training, it does not hold your hand.

Mixed feelings after 10 years

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it. Custom reports beyond the standard set need more patience than they should. The GL integration posts salary journals into Pastel accounting automatically.

Pros

One licence covers up to 500 employees; payslips email directly to staff

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Still glad we chose it, 7 years later

February used to mean overtime for me, now the EMP501 recon is days not weeks. Every SARS code change over the years has arrived on time in an update. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked. Does what it promises and payroll promises are the ones that matter.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs

Mostly happy in Potchefstroom, a few gripes

Good dependable payroll that shows its age at every login. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop.

Good decision for a 420 person company

February used to mean overtime for me, now the EMP501 recon is days not weeks. Payslips email out to staff automatically, no more envelope stuffing on the 25th. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

Pros

EMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile

Food & Beverage · 201–500 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Payroll for 350 staff done by ten in the morning

After the SARS penalty scare with our old system we moved here and it has been calm since. The 20 percent discount for having Pastel accounting made the renewal easier to swallow. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

Cons

Custom reports take patience
