Working well for our 130 person team

After the SARS penalty scare with our old system we moved here and it has been calm since. Our consultant is one phone call away and knows the product inside out. Would recommend to any SA employer with real payroll complexity.

Happy customer in Gqeberha

As the only admin person in a Rustenburg firm, I need payroll that does not fight me. UIF declarations generate monthly and the Department has never queried one. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

Pros

Bank files for all the major SA banks; gL journals post into Pastel accounting

Works well once the setup is right

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it. Custom reports beyond the standard set need more patience than they should. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers.

Pros

Bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Solid choice for an East London employer

After 5 years I have made peace with its quirks. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have. The GL integration posts salary journals into Pastel accounting automatically.

Pros

EMP201 figures straight off a report; bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Our accountant in Mossel Bay recommended it, good call

The statutory tables arrive, you install, and PAYE is simply correct again. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day. It has earned its licence fee every single February.

Mostly happy in East London, a few gripes

Happy with the payroll, tired of the annual admin around it. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers. Our consultant is one phone call away and knows the product inside out.

Pros

Strong consultant network countrywide

Cons

Licence tier jumps are steep

Good but not perfect for our Ballito team

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. The interface is pure desktop nostalgia and not in a charming way.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs

Cons

Licence tier jumps are steep

Good but not perfect for our Somerset West team

We trust the numbers completely, the workflow less so. Custom reports beyond the standard set need more patience than they should.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly

Cons

Training needed for new payroll staff

Doing okay for our 75 person setup

It works, but every year I ask myself if this is the year we go cloud. Everything lives on one machine so remote payroll means remote desktop. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour.

Pros

One licence covers up to 500 employees

Cons

Tied to one machine without hosting

Doing okay for our 160 person setup

Good dependable payroll that shows its age at every login. New payroll staff need proper training, it does not hold your hand. The update instructions read like they were written for the IT department we do not have.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable; bulk increases are quick

Cons

No employee self service

Mixed feelings after 2 years

Does the statutory heavy lifting well and the everyday conveniences poorly. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure.

Pros

Discount when bundled with Pastel accounting

Cons

Custom reports take patience

Our accountant in George recommended it, good call

We run weekly wages for the factory floor and monthly for the office, both smooth. If you run payroll in South Africa you already know why people stay on this.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

UIF, PAYE and SDL all correct to the cent

Payday here is sacred and this system has never once made us late. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day. The mid year and final recons export to e@syFile without a single validation error. Staff get paid, SARS gets its numbers, I get my evenings. Recommended.

Pros

One licence covers up to 500 employees; eMP501 export works perfectly with e@syFile

Solid choice for a Klerksdorp employer

February used to mean overtime for me, now the EMP501 recon is days not weeks. EMP201 figures come straight off a report, I capture them on eFiling and I am done. Boring in the best possible way.

Cons

No employee self service

The tax tables update and I stop worrying

Setup took our consultant one morning and it has run like a clock for 2 years. Leave balances finally match reality because everything is captured in one place. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked. Boring in the best possible way.

Cons

Annual licence model, no monthly option

SARS compliance handled properly

We are a seasonal employer, staff numbers double at harvest, and it just handles it. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure. Ten years from now it will probably still be running our wages.

Cons

Year end update process is a ritual

Solid engine, support waits are real

It calculates everything correctly, it just is not always pleasant getting there. Custom reports beyond the standard set need more patience than they should.

Pros

Bulk increases are quick

Cons

Dated desktop interface
