South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Happy customer in Mbombela

We run weekly wages for the factory floor and monthly for the office, both smooth. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled; bulk increases are quick

Construction South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Good value if you know payroll basics

Does the statutory heavy lifting well and the everyday conveniences poorly. Moving between the licence tiers is a bigger price jump than headcount justifies. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled

Cons

No employee self service

Frustrating experience for our 110 person team

We sat without working payroll for three days in October and support could not help. The export to e@syFile failed with vague errors that support could not decode. One corrupt period file cost us a weekend of restores.

Cons

Feels like a legacy product at premium pricing

Construction · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Working well for our 55 person team

We pay 55 staff across two branches and the run takes under an hour. The 20 percent discount for having Pastel accounting made the renewal easier to swallow. The reports menu has an answer for everything the auditors have ever asked.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

The bank file goes to FNB and everyone gets paid

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots.

Pros

Strong consultant network countrywide

Cons

Doing okay for our 15 person setup

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. Emailing payslips needed SMTP fiddling that took our consultant an hour. Bulk increases across the wage staff took minutes instead of a day.

Pros

EMP201 figures straight off a report

Cons

Support waits get long in tax season

Mostly happy in Rustenburg, a few gripes

Solid product carrying the weight of its desktop roots. The year end update is an annual ritual of downloads, codes and crossed fingers.

Pros

Leave, loans and garnishees all handled; eTI calculated correctly

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

Decent fit for a 40 person company

Good dependable payroll that shows its age at every login. New payroll staff need proper training, it does not hold your hand.

Pros

ETI calculated correctly

Cons

Needs SMTP setup for emailing payslips

Serving our Stellenbosch operation well

Payday here is sacred and this system has never once made us late. The mid year and final recons export to e@syFile without a single validation error. The peace of mind is worth more than the price.

Pros

Termination calculations are reliable

Cons

Custom reports take patience

Solid choice for our Benoni business

We run weekly wages for the factory floor and monthly for the office, both smooth. Termination payouts with leave encashment calculate correctly first time. Payroll is the one thing you cannot get wrong and this gets it right.

Statutory stuff just happens correctly

We pay 420 staff across two branches and the run takes under an hour. You can rerun and check a payslip before committing, which has saved me twice. For desktop payroll with local backup, this is still the benchmark.

Not what we hoped for our Boksburg business

For the renewal price I expect far more than this. The February queue for support means your year end problem waits behind everyone else's.

Cons

Registration and licensing admin wastes days

After the SARS penalty scare with our old system we moved here and it has been calm since. You can rerun and check a payslip before committing, which has saved me twice.

3 years in and still happy

The ETI calculations picked up claims our previous bookkeeper missed entirely. The mid year and final recons export to e@syFile without a single validation error. Payslips email out to staff automatically, no more envelope stuffing on the 25th.

Pros

Handles weekly, fortnightly and monthly runs; bank files for all the major SA banks

Cons

No complaints after 4 years

Leave, loans, garnishees, union deductions, it all fits into the payslip cleanly. It handled the ETI rules correctly when even our accountant was unsure. My successor will inherit it and thank me.

Pros

Discount when bundled with Pastel accounting

Cons

Licence tier jumps are steep
