Vinesh Smith

Supply Chain Manager

21 October 2024

Wholesale · 201–500 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Our 300 user rollout landed on time and on budget

The finance team lives in Excel and the two way integration means they never fight the system. Teams embedded approvals mean directors sign off from their phones. Our partner customised the sales order screen without breaking a single update since. Recommended to every FD who asks, and they ask often.

Pros

Power BI reads live data natively

Cons

SA bank feeds need connectors

Good but not perfect for our Vanderbijlpark team

Powerful, Microsoft flavoured, and priced accordingly. Premium versus Essentials forced a decision we did not feel equipped to make.

Doing okay for our 12 person setup

Good system that keeps reminding you it is licensed per user. Performance dips at month end when everyone hammers the same ledgers.

Pros

Monthly updates, no upgrade projects

Cons

Out of the box reports are average

Still glad we chose it, 4 years later

We moved our distribution business off Pastel Evolution and Business Central has been a level up in every direction. Dimensions replaced our old cost centre hacks with something the auditors actually praised.

Pros

AppSource marketplace for add ons

Cons

Customisations need testing every update

Healthcare · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Grew from 12 users to 180 without replatforming

After 2 years the verdict is positive with real footnotes. The licensing matrix took our IT manager a weekend to truly understand. New starters know Outlook and Excel already, so the learning curve is gentler than the last ERP.

Pros

Scales without replatforming

Cons

Licensing model takes study

Construction · 500+ employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Grew from 12 users to 900 without replatforming

We are happy on it, though the total cost of ownership needed explaining to the board. The licensing matrix took our IT manager a weekend to truly understand. Uptime has been effectively perfect for 2 years.

Pros

Approvals inside Teams and Outlook

Cons

Out of the box reports are average

Working well for our 40 person team

Our partner in Centurion ran the implementation in four months and we went live without missing a shipping day. Bank reconciliation with imported statements is quick and the matching learns. Inventory costing is finally real: FIFO where we need it, standard cost where we do not. Worth the project, worth the licences, worth the change management.

The Microsoft gravity is real and useful

Very capable once configured, and configuring took longer than promised. Getting SA specific bank integration working needed a third party connector. Reporting via Power BI replaced a full time spreadsheet job.

Good product behind a proper project

It does everything, which means deciding what it should do took months. Some screens feel heavy and a warehouse clerk notices the clicks. Dimensions replaced our old cost centre hacks with something the auditors actually praised.
