We expected ERP and got modules held together by hope

Performance degraded as we grew, which is backwards for an ERP. Support tickets bounce between the partner and Sage while the branch waits. We needed a DBA on retainer just to keep the system responsive.

Pros

Sage Intelligence for exec reporting

Cons

Go live overruns came out of our pocket

Solid choice for our Sandton business

Our reseller in Knysna knows our setup personally, that relationship is gold. For SA mid market businesses this is the sensible ERP conversation to have.

Pros

Sage Intelligence for exec reporting

Cons

Consulting costs are part of ownership

Technology · 500+ employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Good decision for a 750 person company

We evaluated the international ERPs and the local pricing and support won. Pricing matrices handle our customer specific discounts without side letters. Branch accounting keeps each depot honest while head office sees everything.

Pros

Strong job costing and BOM functionality

Cons

Implementation is a genuine project

Doing okay for our 220 person setup

Good system, but understand you are buying a project not a product. You need a proper server and IT discipline, this is not plug and play.

Pros

Serial and lot tracking that works; developed locally with real SARS depth

Cons

Custom reports need SQL skills or partner hours

A quiet workhorse for 2 years now

Our warehouse accuracy sits above 99 percent since the multi bin setup. It absorbed a 40 percent growth year without breaking stride.

Pros

SQL Server foundation, no data black box

Retail · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Doing okay for our 12 person setup

A capable ERP that gives back exactly what you put into the implementation. Upgrades between versions are mini projects with consulting hours attached.

Pros

Procurement approval workflows

evolution has been our backbone for 8 years

After 8 years the system still handles our growing transaction volumes fine. Branch accounting keeps each depot honest while head office sees everything. Would we choose it again? We did, for our second company.

Financial Services · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Good decision for a 80 person company

The procurement module ended the era of surprise supplier invoices. Credit control workflows chase debtors before humans remember to.

Pros

Multi warehouse and multi branch support; modular licensing, grow as needed

Manufacturing South Africa Used for 2+ years

Good decision for a 15 person company

Fixed assets, job costing and CRM in the same database ended our spreadsheet farm. VAT and SARS alignment is native, not an afterthought like the imports. It is the system our business grew up on and grew into.

Reporting straight off SQL is a superpower

Very powerful, and it makes you earn that power. Performance needs tuning once the database grows past a few years of history. VAT and SARS alignment is native, not an afterthought like the imports.

Cons

Upgrades test every customisation

Food & Beverage · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Solid choice for our Johannesburg business

It was built here, and you feel that in how it handles VAT and SARS reporting. Sage Intelligence gives the exco their monthly pack straight from the ledger. It runs the business so we can run the business.

Pros

Developed locally with real SARS depth; procurement approval workflows

Cons

Interface feels dated

Mostly happy in Benoni, a few gripes

Good system, but understand you are buying a project not a product. Licensing changes over the years have made cost planning harder.

Pros

Granular user security

Cons

Training costs add up per module

Our Polokwane office gave up on it

Everything works until you customise, then upgrades become warfare. A version upgrade broke our custom reports and rebuilding them cost real money.

Cons

Upgrades broke customisations repeatedly

Mostly happy in Klerksdorp, a few gripes

A capable ERP that gives back exactly what you put into the implementation. Upgrades between versions are mini projects with consulting hours attached. The partner channel means you are never more than a phone call from help.

Serving our Roodepoort operation well

We consolidated five companies onto one platform and month end became sane. Sage Intelligence gives the exco their monthly pack straight from the ledger. Serious software that rewards a serious implementation.

After 2 years we know its strengths and we budget for its weaknesses. Licensing changes over the years have made cost planning harder.

Pros

Cons

Good but not perfect for our Umhlanga team

Happy with it overall, our partner relationship makes the difference. Sage Intelligence gives the exco their monthly pack straight from the ledger.

Food & Beverage · 11–50 employees Namibia Used for 2+ years

Mostly happy in Sandton, a few gripes

The engine is strong, the ownership costs are real. The screens work but graduates raised on cloud software find them foreign. The modular licensing meant we bought what we needed and added later.

Pros

Granular user security

Cons

Upgrades test every customisation

Botswana Used for 2+ years

5 years in and still happy

Being able to pull anything out of SQL means no report is impossible. Stock takes went from a weekend shutdown to a rolling count. For SA mid market businesses this is the sensible ERP conversation to have.

Pros

Multi warehouse and multi branch support; strong job costing and BOM functionality

Cons

Interface feels dated
