Busisiwe Van der Merwe

Warehouse Manager

26 November 2025

Healthcare · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Implementation ran double the quote

The product may be fine, our implementation certainly was not. Training was quoted per module and the total made the CFO wince.

Pros

Developed locally with real SARS depth

Cons

Upgrades broke customisations repeatedly. Simple changes always need paid consulting

The upgrade from Pastel Partner was worth every cent

Fixed assets, job costing and CRM in the same database ended our spreadsheet farm. The partner channel means you are never more than a phone call from help. It is the system our business grew up on and grew into.

Still glad we chose it, 4 years later

It scaled from our first 5 users to 350 without a replatform. Pricing matrices handle our customer specific discounts without side letters. Five years in, still the right call.

Pros

Strong job costing and BOM functionality; huge business partner network countrywide

Cons

Needs proper server infrastructure

The quote said one thing, year two said another

Performance degraded as we grew, which is backwards for an ERP. Training was quoted per module and the total made the CFO wince.

Pros

Huge business partner network countrywide

Cons

Go live overruns came out of our pocket

Disappointed after 10 years

Month end got slower every quarter until we intervened at the database level.

Cons

Go live overruns came out of our pocket. Simple changes always need paid consulting

Frustrating experience for our 420 person team

Two years in and we are still paying consultants for basics. Training was quoted per module and the total made the CFO wince. Simple changes need consultant hours, nothing is ever just a setting.

Cons

Needed a DBA just to stay responsive

Happy customer in Mbombela

We moved off Pastel Partner when we hit its limits and Evolution has carried us since. Our auditors connect their tools directly and the audit got shorter. User security is granular down to the field level where we need it.

Pros

SQL Server foundation, no data black box; huge business partner network countrywide

Cons

Interface feels dated

Mostly happy in Stellenbosch, a few gripes

Happy with it overall, our partner relationship makes the difference. You need a proper server and IT discipline, this is not plug and play. Pricing matrices handle our customer specific discounts without side letters.

Cons

Interface feels dated

Working well for our 75 person team

It scaled from our first 5 users to 75 without a replatform. Approval workflows in procurement stopped orders nobody authorised. For SA mid market businesses this is the sensible ERP conversation to have.

Pros

Procurement approval workflows; granular user security

Happy customer in Paarl

Our distribution business runs 15 users across three branches on it daily. Serial number tracking sorted our warranty claims process completely.

Multi warehouse and multi branch support; granular user security

Mostly happy in Boksburg, a few gripes

It does what we need, though rarely in a modern looking way. Performance needs tuning once the database grows past a few years of history.

Pros

Modular licensing, grow as needed

Cons

CRM module is thin

Our accountant in Randburg recommended it, good call

As a manufacturer, the bill of materials and WIP tracking fit us exactly. Pricing matrices handle our customer specific discounts without side letters.

Cons

Financial Services · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Working well for our 70 person team

Job costing changed how we price contracts, we finally see true margin per job. The modular licensing meant we bought what we needed and added later.

Cons

Performance tuning needed as data grows

7 January 2025

Healthcare · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Decent fit for a 75 person company

After 2 years we know its strengths and we budget for its weaknesses. Licensing changes over the years have made cost planning harder. Every module posts to one general ledger so the numbers always agree.

Pros

Strong job costing and BOM functionality

Cons

Consulting costs are part of ownership

Capable but you must invest in it

Happy with it overall, our partner relationship makes the difference. Documentation assumes your partner fills the gaps, and they charge to.

Pros

SQL Server foundation, no data black box

Cons

Interface feels dated

Doing okay for our 60 person setup

The engine is strong, the ownership costs are real. Some modules like CRM feel like an afterthought next to the financial core.

Interface feels dated

Disappointed after 2 years

The quote for licences was honest, the cost of ownership was not. We needed a DBA on retainer just to keep the system responsive.

Cons

Total cost of ownership far above the quote

Grew from 5 users to 15 without changing systems

As a manufacturer, the bill of materials and WIP tracking fit us exactly. Credit control workflows chase debtors before humans remember to. It runs the business so we can run the business.

Pros

Natural upgrade path from Pastel

Doing the job for us in Springs

It scaled from our first 5 users to 160 without a replatform. The upgrade path from Pastel preserved our history, nothing was lost. Pricing matrices handle our customer specific discounts without side letters.

Pros

POS option feeding the same ledger
