Our accountant in Knysna recommended it, good call

We are 70 people with no HR department and Breathe quietly became it. Performance check ins are light but they happen, which beats heavy and skipped.

Cons

Tier jumps on one hire

Solid choice for our Richards Bay business

Leave lived in a shared spreadsheet nobody trusted, now nobody argues. Simple, predictable and quietly essential now.

Pros

No per seat maths ever

Staff records that survive manager turnover

Our George studio put policies in with read receipts and the disputes just stopped. Approvals route to the right manager without anyone maintaining a diagram. The flat tier absorbed our seasonal staff without a billing surprise. Recommended to every owner still running leave in Excel.

Pros

One click exports for advisors

Cons

Public holidays loaded manually

Nonprofit · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Decent fit for a 130 person company

Solid records and leave, everything else is lighter. Reporting is lists and exports rather than insight. The tier boundaries mean one hire can bump the whole monthly price.

Pros

Leave and absence handled cleanly

Cons

Pound billing moves with the rand

Leave admin left the spreadsheet at last

Does what we bought it for and little beyond. The tier boundaries mean one hire can bump the whole monthly price. Approvals route to the right manager without anyone maintaining a diagram.

Pros

One click exports for advisors; no per seat maths ever

Cons

Performance tools are light

Mixed feelings after 3 years

Does what we bought it for and little beyond. Pound billing shifts with the exchange rate quarter to quarter. Approvals route to the right manager without anyone maintaining a diagram.

Pros

One click exports for advisors

Cons

UK hours support

Doing okay for our 55 person setup

A good honest product with a British accent you will need to manage. Performance tools are check ins, not a real review framework. There is no employment equity or skills reporting, that stays in spreadsheets.

Pros

Leave and absence handled cleanly

Cons

No employment equity reporting

Good but not perfect for our George team

It handles the basics well and the basics are most of it. The leave defaults arrive very British and need proper SA configuration on day one.

Pros

Company calendar for resourcing

HR for 5 people without an HR person

Our Klerksdorp studio put policies in with read receipts and the disputes just stopped. Document acknowledgement means policy arguments end with a timestamp.

Company calendar for resourcing

Cons

Tier jumps on one hire

Real Estate · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Decent system with UK assumptions

For the price we forgive the gaps, mostly. Public holidays needed manual loading for the South African calendar. Performance check ins are light but they happen, which beats heavy and skipped.

Pros

Setup in a weekend

Pound billing moves with the rand

Working well for our 6 person team

We are 6 people with no HR department and Breathe quietly became it. Leave balances calculate themselves and staff check the app instead of asking.

Pros

Document acknowledgement with timestamps

Cons

Pound billing moves with the rand

6 years in and still happy

Our Mossel Bay studio put policies in with read receipts and the disputes just stopped. Leave balances calculate themselves and staff check the app instead of asking. Document acknowledgement means policy arguments end with a timestamp.

Good decision for a 55 person company

Managers approve leave from their phones and the office manager got her Fridays back. Document acknowledgement means policy arguments end with a timestamp. Performance check ins are light but they happen, which beats heavy and skipped. Our people admin went from liability to non event.

Mostly happy in Mossel Bay, a few gripes

Happy with the core, aware of the edges. Public holidays needed manual loading for the South African calendar.

Support hours belong to another time zone

Support in another time zone tested our patience repeatedly. Our question sat overnight, twice, during a dismissal process.

Overnight waits during urgent processes

Our Klerksdorp team stopped arguing about leave

A good honest product with a British accent you will need to manage. The org chart stays current because the records underneath it do.

No employment equity reporting

Retail South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Frustrating experience for our 20 person team

The UK assumptions run deeper than the sales call suggested. The band jump doubled our bill for the sake of two hires. Our question sat overnight, twice, during a dismissal process.

Cons

Statutory categories need workarounds

A quiet workhorse for 3 years now

Onboarding documents go out before day one and arrive back signed. Approvals route to the right manager without anyone maintaining a diagram. The employee self service means staff update their own banking and addresses. Recommended to every owner still running leave in Excel.
