South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Solid choice for our Umhlanga business

Auto enrolment used to terrify our juniors, the software walks them through it. Support turnaround on a technical statutory question was under an hour. Our bureau would not run without it.

Pros

Seamless new tax year updates

Mostly happy in Springs, a few gripes

We love the product and squint at the new pricing model. Some bureau workflows still feel smoother in the desktop version. The price per client is low enough that small employers stay profitable to serve.

Pros

Batch processing across employers

Cons

Transition period support waits

Let us down when it counted

The forced cloud migration landed in our busiest quarter. The cloud quote for our book nearly doubled our software line. Tickets during the migration window took days instead of hours.

Cons

Migration landed on busy season. Cloud quotes jumped over desktop pricing

Exactly what our 45 person business needed

RTI submissions file to HMRC on time, every period, without ceremony. Payslip layouts are polished enough that clients notice the upgrade. The employee app shows payslips, P60s and leave without a single email from us.

Cons

Cloud pricing needs a calculator quote

CIS handling for construction clients works properly, which UK software often fumbles. The client portal lets UK employers approve timesheets in their own morning.

Pros

Auto enrolment with major UK providers; polished payslip layouts

Great engine, transition wobbles

Excellent for UK work, and obviously it does nothing for SA payrolls. Our quote for the cloud came in higher than the old desktop licence, noticeably. The employee app shows payslips, P60s and leave without a single email from us.

Cons

Desktop retirement forces migration

Mostly happy in Somerset West, a few gripes

Great software navigating its own cloud migration with mixed grace. Migration of multi year client history to the cloud needed careful checking. Automatic cloud backups ended the desktop backup discipline problem.

Pros

CIS for construction clients

Cons

UK and Irish legislation only

Running 20 UK client payrolls from Klerksdorp

We process UK payroll for British accounting firms and BrightPay is the tool of that trade. Worth every pound of the licence, and it is not many pounds.

Cons

Some workflows smoother on desktop still

Good but not perfect for our Benoni team

Superb payroll software in the middle of a platform transition. Desktop dies with the 2025 to 26 tax year and not everyone is ready. Pension re enrolment dates track themselves across every employer.

Pros

Employee app for payslips and P60s; journal export to Xero and FreeAgent

Cons

UK and Irish legislation only

Running 10 UK client payrolls from Richards Bay

Our UK clients' employees get payslips through the app and the queries dried up. The price per client is low enough that small employers stay profitable to serve. The client portal lets UK employers approve timesheets in their own morning. UK payroll processed from Durban, professionally, profitably, calmly.

Pros

Batch processing across employers

UK and Irish legislation only

The cloud platform means our UK clients approve runs in their portal overnight our time. Furlough era complexity was handled quickly, which earned lasting trust. The most reliable software in our entire practice stack.

Our outsourcing team swears by it

Auto enrolment used to terrify our juniors, the software walks them through it. New tax year updates arrive seamlessly with the rates already right. The client portal lets UK employers approve timesheets in their own morning.

New pricing turned our smallest clients unprofitable to serve. Training the team on the cloud workflows cost a week we had not budgeted.

Good but not perfect for our Polokwane team

The engine is flawless, the era change around it less so. It is UK and Irish legislation only, an SA employer needs local software.

Disappointed after 8 years

We loved the desktop and the desktop is being retired under us. Two client files migrated with pension history gaps we caught by luck.

Cons
