South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Good decision for a 6 person company

The bureau licence covering unlimited employers is the best value in payroll anywhere. Payslip layouts are polished enough that clients notice the upgrade.

We process UK payroll for British accounting firms and BrightPay is the tool of that trade. If you serve UK clients from SA, this is the standard for a reason.

Pros

Seamless new tax year updates

Running 20 UK client payrolls from Mbombela

Excellent for UK work, and obviously it does nothing for SA payrolls. The calculator based cloud pricing makes budgeting a guessing game until the quote lands.

Pros

Polished payslip layouts; bureau licence covers unlimited employers

Auto enrolment handled without the headache

Statutory sick pay, maternity, paternity, it calculates all of it correctly first time. Worth every pound of the licence, and it is not many pounds.

Pros

Journal export to Xero and FreeAgent

Cons

Some workflows smoother on desktop still

Exactly what our 20 person business needed

Our bureau in Kimberley runs 25 UK client payrolls on it and pay day has never once slipped. HMRC recognition means submissions just work, no middleware, no prayers. Batch processing runs a dozen small employers before the first coffee.

Cons

Transition period support waits

Our accountant in Pretoria recommended it, good call

We process UK payroll for British accounting firms and BrightPay is the tool of that trade. The price per client is low enough that small employers stay profitable to serve. The employee app shows payslips, P60s and leave without a single email from us.

Cons

Some workflows smoother on desktop still

Doing okay for our 6 person setup

Excellent for UK work, and obviously it does nothing for SA payrolls. Some bureau workflows still feel smoother in the desktop version. Support waits stretched during the transition rush.

Pros

Client portals for approvals

Cons

Cloud pricing needs a calculator quote

Good decision for a 22 person company

Our UK clients' employees get payslips through the app and the queries dried up.

Mostly happy in Klerksdorp, a few gripes

The engine is flawless, the era change around it less so. Our quote for the cloud came in higher than the old desktop licence, noticeably. Furlough era complexity was handled quickly, which earned lasting trust.

Pros

Polished payslip layouts

Cons

Some workflows smoother on desktop still

Frustrating experience for our 28 person team

We loved the desktop and the desktop is being retired under us. Tickets during the migration window took days instead of hours.

The engine is flawless, the era change around it less so. It is UK and Irish legislation only, an SA employer needs local software. Furlough era complexity was handled quickly, which earned lasting trust.

Good but not perfect for our Kimberley team

Great software navigating its own cloud migration with mixed grace. Desktop dies with the 2025 to 26 tax year and not everyone is ready. Automatic cloud backups ended the desktop backup discipline problem.

Pros

Polished payslip layouts
