Protea Construction

Construction & Trades · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Solid choice for our Klerksdorp business

Our two branches each run as a location and the owner sees them side by side. Our Nedbank feed feeds all of it, and reconciling takes minutes. Five stars, and I do not hand those out easily.

Pros

Inventory with automatic cost of sales

Manufacturing · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Mixed feelings after 4 years

Great tier, though the total cost creeps up on you. The price is fair but the annual increases arrive reliably. VAT stays right through all of it, stock purchases, project invoicing, everything at 15%.

Pros

Big capability jump for a modest price step

Cons

Opening stock setup takes real effort

Good but not perfect for our George team

Very capable software that asks for a proper setup effort first. The project reports are good but you cannot customise them much at this tier. Class and location tracking up to forty covers our branches with room to spare.

Pros

Big capability jump for a modest price step; inventory with automatic cost of sales

Cons

No serial numbers, batches or multi warehouse

Still glad we chose it, 8 years later

Purchase orders to our suppliers now come out of the system instead of WhatsApp messages. Low stock alerts are set per item and they fire early enough to reorder in time. The five seats each carry their own permissions, so the sales guy sees sales and nothing else.

Pros

Project profitability visible while jobs run

Cons

Annual price increases are dependable

Mixed feelings after 5 years

The features are all here, some are deeper than others. Some inventory workflows clearly assume US sales tax rather than VAT and need care. Our Capitec feed feeds all of it, and reconciling takes minutes.

Mostly happy in Boksburg, a few gripes

Very capable software that asks for a proper setup effort first. Class tracking capped at forty sounds fine until you get creative with divisions. Some inventory workflows clearly assume US sales tax rather than VAT and need care.

Pros

Customer AI resurfaces quiet leads; handles agency, workshop and retail patterns

Cons

No serial numbers, batches or multi warehouse

Decent fit for a 25 person company

The features are all here, some are deeper than others. The feed hiccupped twice this year and stock purchases had to be matched by hand.

Pros

Purchase orders that convert to bills

Cons

Class tracking capped at forty

South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Mostly happy in Midrand, a few gripes

Excellent plan overall with a couple of honest limitations. The price is fair but the annual increases arrive reliably. Reporting at this tier is genuinely strong, profit by project, by class, by location, by month.

Pros

Project profitability visible while jobs run

Cons

Some stock workflows assume US tax

From guessing margins to knowing them

I manage 18 active projects at any time and each one shows its own profit line. Project reports show labour, materials and overheads against each job while it runs.

Pros

Handles agency, workshop and retail patterns

Good decision for a 25 person company

I manage 8 active projects at any time and each one shows its own profit line. Low stock alerts are set per item and they fire early enough to reorder in time. Inventory quantities stay honest because every sale and purchase moves the count automatically. It runs the shop, the workshop and the books. Enough said.

Powerful once you survive the setup

Good software with a big appetite for configuration. Inventory has no serial numbers, no batches and no multiple warehouses, know that going in.

Pros

Strong reporting at this tier; low stock alerts that fire in time

Cons

Some stock workflows assume US tax

Great tier, though the total cost creeps up on you. Some inventory workflows clearly assume US sales tax rather than VAT and need care. The jump in capability over Essentials is far bigger than the jump in price.

For our size it is right, though I can see where it ends. The price is fair but the annual increases arrive reliably. Some inventory workflows clearly assume US sales tax rather than VAT and need care.

Frustrating experience for our 25 person team

For what we pay now the gaps are harder to accept. We asked support about negative stock and got three contradictory answers.

Cons

Setup effort far beyond the marketing

Happy customer in Vanderbijlpark

Moved our retail shop onto it in July and the stockholding number finally means something. Our year end stock take matched the system within a rounding error, first time ever. Five stars, and I do not hand those out easily.

Pros

VAT correct through stock and projects; big capability jump for a modest price step

Working well for our 12 person team

Cost of sales calculates itself as we sell, which ended our monthly margin guessing ritual. Budgets against actuals per class made our monthly management meeting actually useful.

Pros

VAT correct through stock and projects; project profitability visible while jobs run

Cons

No serial numbers, batches or multi warehouse

Happy customer in Upington

Purchase orders to our suppliers now come out of the system instead of WhatsApp messages. Purchase orders convert to bills when the stock arrives, one flow from order to payment. Everything the sales rep quotes on the road is visible to the office in real time. This is the plan QuickBooks should lead with in South Africa.

Cons

No serial numbers, batches or multi warehouse

The plan our Bloemfontein agency should have started on

I manage 60 active projects at any time and each one shows its own profit line. The jump in capability over Essentials is far bigger than the jump in price.

Pros

Class and location tracking for branches; big capability jump for a modest price step
