Charmaine Smith

Practice Owner · Smith Catering Supplies

16 December 2024

Hospitality · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Runs payroll for all 15 of my clients from one login

Tax changes land in the product overnight and I never install anything. The tiers by headcount are clear, you always know what growth will cost. If you are still installing payroll updates, you are working too hard.

Retail · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Setup was quicker than making the coffee

Mostly a pleasure, occasionally a shrug. Bulk changes across many employees still mean editing one at a time. The leave module means my staff request days in the app, not in the passage.

Pros

Great entry price for micro employers; journals post to Sage Accounting

Cons

Bulk employee changes are tedious

Mostly happy in Pretoria, a few gripes

Good simple product, just know its limits before committing. There is no proper costing split if staff work across departments.

Cons

Employee self service is basic

Hospitality · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Decent fit for a 30 person company

Coming from desktop payroll, some things are better and a few are missing. The employee self service is more basic than the marketing suggests.

Pros

ACB bank files for the major banks

Cons

Ticket support can take days

Good but not perfect for our Pretoria team

Coming from desktop payroll, some things are better and a few are missing. You cannot customise the payslip layout much at all. The employee self service is more basic than the marketing suggests.

Hospitality · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Legislative updates just appear, done

Everything happens in the browser so office, home or client site makes no difference. The EMP201 figures are on screen when I need them for eFiling.

Pros

Guided pay run anyone can follow; aCB bank files for the major banks

Pay run done from the beach in December

Good simple product, just know its limits before committing. Reporting is thin, beyond the standard set you export and build it yourself. New tax year opened by itself, correct tables, zero downloads.

Pros

Runs anywhere with a browser

Cons

Complex pay structures do not fit well

Still glad we chose it, 3 years later

After years of annual licence maths, paying by headcount monthly feels honest. If you are still installing payroll updates, you are working too hard.

Pros

Leave management included

Accounting · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Exactly what our 6 person business needed

Payslips hit staff email the moment I finalise, the WhatsApp questions stopped. Adding a new employee is a ten minute form and they are in the next run. It posts the salary journals through to Sage Accounting automatically. The compliance peace of mind alone is worth it.

Decent fit for a 8 person company

Happy after 2 years but the feature gaps are taking long to close. The browser session times out faster than I would like mid capture.

Pros

Cons

Runs payroll for all 50 of my clients from one login

It suits our small setup, though I can see the ceiling from here. There is no proper costing split if staff work across departments. The tiers by headcount are clear, you always know what growth will cost.

Pros

IRP5s generated at year end; legislative updates happen automatically in the cloud

Cons

Our accountant in Pietermaritzburg recommended it, good call

I run payroll for 25 client companies from one login and the unlimited companies pricing makes my whole practice model work. It works fine on my phone browser when I am away from the desk.

Pros

Free 30 day demo company

The ACB file goes to FNB and payday happens

The pay run is a guided checklist, I literally cannot forget a step. The audit trail shows who changed what, useful with two admins. For the price there is nothing to think about.

Food & Beverage · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Exactly what our 22 person business needed

Our accountant has her own access, checks the run monthly and we never email files around. Support chat actually solved my ETI question the same morning. It quietly does exactly what it promises every month.

Pros

Serving our Ballito operation well

We pay weekly wages and monthly salaries side by side without any drama. Loading our history from the old system went better than expected.

Working well for our 8 person team

I ran December pay from a guest house in the Berg, that flexibility is real. PAYE, UIF and SDL are always current with SARS because the cloud updates itself.
