Mandla Ramjee

Bookkeeper

25 September 2024

Healthcare · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Doing okay for our 5 person setup

Happy after 2 years but the feature gaps are taking long to close. There is no proper costing split if staff work across departments.

Pros

Legislative updates happen automatically in the cloud; runs anywhere with a browser

Cons

Complex pay structures do not fit well

Expected better, Sandton customer

Fine for five staff, frustrating at fifty. We needed a costing report the system simply cannot produce.

Cons

Migration from desktop lost history detail

Hospitality · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Perfect for a small Johannesburg employer

We like it, though we keep a spreadsheet next to it for the odd calculations. There is no proper costing split if staff work across departments. It posts the salary journals through to Sage Accounting automatically.

Pros

Great entry price for micro employers

Cons

No department cost splitting

Mostly happy in Springs, a few gripes

Coming from desktop payroll, some things are better and a few are missing. Complex pay structures with multiple rate tables just do not fit. You cannot customise the payslip layout much at all.

Pros

Runs anywhere with a browser; unlimited companies and users on every tier

Cons

Bulk employee changes are tedious

Mostly happy in Rustenburg, a few gripes

It handles the common cases beautifully and the uncommon ones not at all. There is no proper costing split if staff work across departments.

Pros

Clear headcount based pricing in rand

Cons

Ticket support can take days

South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Mostly happy in Paarl, a few gripes

Easy to run, harder to get deep information out of. The ACB file loads into FNB business banking and the whole run pays in one batch.

Pros

Clear headcount based pricing in rand; unlimited companies and users on every tier

Cons

Bulk employee changes are tedious

Good decision for a 7 person company

I ran December pay from a guest house in the Berg, that flexibility is real. The ACB file loads into Absa business banking and the whole run pays in one batch.

Pros

Clear headcount based pricing in rand; legislative updates happen automatically in the cloud

Legal · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Mostly happy in Sandton, a few gripes

Good simple product, just know its limits before committing. Complex pay structures with multiple rate tables just do not fit. Support is friendly but tickets beyond the basics take a few days.

Cons

Reporting beyond the standard set is thin

The pay run reminds me what to do next

Moved off desktop payroll in October and the year end was suddenly a non event. Adding a new employee is a ten minute form and they are in the next run.

Pros

Real time payslip calculations

Cons

Ticket support can take days

Legal · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Perfect for a small Durban employer

Everything happens in the browser so office, home or client site makes no difference. IRP5s at year end were generated without me touching a settings screen. Payroll went from monthly dread to a fifteen minute task.

Pros

Legislative updates happen automatically in the cloud

Solid choice for our Rustenburg business

We are 130 people and the monthly cost is less than a round of coffees. PAYE, UIF and SDL are always current with SARS because the cloud updates itself.

Pros

IRP5s generated at year end; unlimited companies and users on every tier

South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Mostly happy in eMalahleni, a few gripes

Mostly a pleasure, occasionally a shrug. Reporting is thin, beyond the standard set you export and build it yourself. You cannot customise the payslip layout much at all.

Pros

Great entry price for micro employers; legislative updates happen automatically in the cloud

Cons

Payslip layout is barely customisable

Working well for our 5 person team

Tax changes land in the product overnight and I never install anything. You can preview a payslip before finalising, mistakes get caught early. Adding a new employee is a ten minute form and they are in the next run.

Pros

Automatic UIF declarations; journals post to Sage Accounting

Cons

Session timeouts during long captures

Good but not perfect for our Johannesburg team

We like it, though we keep a spreadsheet next to it for the odd calculations. Reporting is thin, beyond the standard set you export and build it yourself. Support chat actually solved my ETI question the same morning.

Cons

Ticket support can take days

The ACB file goes to Capitec and payday happens

The real time calculation shows me the net pay effect before I commit anything. New tax year opened by itself, correct tables, zero downloads. The tiers by headcount are clear, you always know what growth will cost. I recommend it to every small employer who asks me.

Pros

Real time payslip calculations; guided pay run anyone can follow

Cons

Payslip layout is barely customisable

Hospitality · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Working well for our 15 person team

Our accountant has her own access, checks the run monthly and we never email files around. IRP5s at year end were generated without me touching a settings screen. Perfect for bookkeepers with a stable of small clients.

Pros

Real time payslip calculations; automatic UIF declarations

Cons

Session timeouts during long captures

Mostly happy in George, a few gripes

Good simple product, just know its limits before committing. You cannot customise the payslip layout much at all. The leave module means my staff request days in the app, not in the passage.

Pros

Leave management included

Cons

Mostly happy in Randburg, a few gripes

Easy to run, harder to get deep information out of. Bulk changes across many employees still mean editing one at a time. Adding a new employee is a ten minute form and they are in the next run.

Pros

Legislative updates happen automatically in the cloud

Cons

Payslip layout is barely customisable

Happy customer in Johannesburg

As a first time employer I was terrified of PAYE and this held my hand through it. The audit trail shows who changed what, useful with two admins. Cannot imagine going back to desktop payroll now.

Pros

Weekly and monthly cycles side by side
