Group Accountant · Potchefstroom Agri Works

28 November 2025

South Africa Used for 2+ years

evolution has been our backbone for 5 years

Implementation took four months with our business partner and it was worth the slog. Stock takes went from a weekend shutdown to a rolling count. It is the system our business grew up on and grew into.

Pros

Handles growing transaction volumes; natural upgrade path from Pastel

South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Our accountant in Johannesburg recommended it, good call

It was built here, and you feel that in how it handles VAT and SARS reporting. Every module posts to one general ledger so the numbers always agree. It is the system our business grew up on and grew into.

Pros

SQL Server foundation, no data black box; natural upgrade path from Pastel

3 years in and still happy

We consolidated five companies onto one platform and month end became sane. Every module posts to one general ledger so the numbers always agree. Would we choose it again? We did, for our second company.

Healthcare South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Runs our 8 user operation end to end

It scaled from our first 5 users to 8 without a replatform. The SQL foundation means our BI tool reads live data straight from the source.

Pros

Multi warehouse and multi branch support; sage Intelligence for exec reporting

Cons

Consulting costs are part of ownership

Mostly happy in Pretoria, a few gripes

Good system, but understand you are buying a project not a product. Report writing beyond the standard set means paying your partner or learning SQL. Pricing matrices handle our customer specific discounts without side letters.

Pros

Natural upgrade path from Pastel; multi warehouse and multi branch support

Grew from 5 users to 520 without changing systems

Our reseller in Gqeberha knows our setup personally, that relationship is gold. Every module posts to one general ledger so the numbers always agree. Stock takes went from a weekend shutdown to a rolling count. The step up from Pastel every growing business eventually needs.

Outgrew Pastel and Evolution was the natural step

The engine is strong, the ownership costs are real. Licensing changes over the years have made cost planning harder. Every module posts to one general ledger so the numbers always agree.

Pros

Sage Intelligence for exec reporting; serial and lot tracking that works

Happy customer in Knysna

Our reseller in Knysna knows our setup personally, that relationship is gold. Branch accounting keeps each depot honest while head office sees everything. The upgrade path from Pastel preserved our history, nothing was lost. Serious software that rewards a serious implementation.

Good but not perfect for our eMalahleni team

Happy with it overall, our partner relationship makes the difference. You need a proper server and IT discipline, this is not plug and play.

Pros

Handles growing transaction volumes

Cons

Implementation is a genuine project

Solid, scalable and supported down the road

It scaled from our first 5 users to 180 without a replatform. Every module posts to one general ledger so the numbers always agree. Serial number tracking sorted our warranty claims process completely.

The reseller network is the hidden asset

Deep functionality behind an interface from another decade. Licensing changes over the years have made cost planning harder. Sage Intelligence gives the exco their monthly pack straight from the ledger.

Very powerful, and it makes you earn that power. Some modules like CRM feel like an afterthought next to the financial core. The modular licensing meant we bought what we needed and added later.

Pros

Huge business partner network countrywide

Cons

Interface feels dated

Decent fit for a 22 person company

After 2 years we know its strengths and we budget for its weaknesses. You need a proper server and IT discipline, this is not plug and play. Licensing changes over the years have made cost planning harder.

Pros

POS option feeding the same ledger; handles growing transaction volumes

Cons

Needs proper server infrastructure

Our Vereeniging office gave up on it

Our partner oversold and under delivered, and Sage points back at the partner. Support tickets bounce between the partner and Sage while the branch waits.

Cons

Simple changes always need paid consulting

Frustrating experience for our 350 person team

Month end got slower every quarter until we intervened at the database level. We needed a DBA on retainer just to keep the system responsive.

Cons

Needed a DBA just to stay responsive. Simple changes always need paid consulting

Our accountant in Potchefstroom recommended it, good call

The procurement module ended the era of surprise supplier invoices. Credit control workflows chase debtors before humans remember to. User security is granular down to the field level where we need it. It runs the business so we can run the business.

Pros

SQL Server foundation, no data black box; natural upgrade path from Pastel
