Operations Manager · Richards Bay Hardware Solutions

12 October 2024

South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Exactly what our 20 person business needed

Leave lived in a shared spreadsheet nobody trusted, now nobody argues. Exporting for the accountant or a labour consultant takes one click. Leave balances calculate themselves and staff check the app instead of asking.

Pros

Self service staff records; one click exports for advisors

Cons

Performance tools are light

Real Estate · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

HR for 9 people without an HR person

Solid records and leave, everything else is lighter. The leave defaults arrive very British and need proper SA configuration on day one. Approvals route to the right manager without anyone maintaining a diagram.

Pros

Light performance check ins

Cons

Public holidays loaded manually

Retail South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Doing the job for us in Somerset West

Our Gqeberha studio put policies in with read receipts and the disputes just stopped. The flat tier absorbed our seasonal staff without a billing surprise. New managers learn it in an afternoon because there is nothing to learn.

Pros

Self service staff records

Decent fit for a 35 person company

Solid records and leave, everything else is lighter. Performance tools are check ins, not a real review framework.

Our Rustenburg team stopped arguing about leave

After 2 years it fits, with configured workarounds. Pound billing shifts with the exchange rate quarter to quarter. New managers learn it in an afternoon because there is nothing to learn.

Mostly happy in eMalahleni, a few gripes

Does what we bought it for and little beyond. Support answers on UK hours, so afternoon questions wait overnight.

Happy with the core, aware of the edges. Performance tools are check ins, not a real review framework. The org chart stays current because the records underneath it do.

We needed more than records and leave

It suited us at fifteen people and constrained us at fifty. Our question sat overnight, twice, during a dismissal process.

Pros

Approvals route themselves

Cons

Statutory categories need workarounds

Doing the job for us in Sandton

We configured South African leave rules once and it has behaved ever since. New managers learn it in an afternoon because there is nothing to learn. Document acknowledgement means policy arguments end with a timestamp.

Leave and absence handled cleanly

Solid records and leave, everything else is lighter. Pound billing shifts with the exchange rate quarter to quarter. The tier boundaries mean one hire can bump the whole monthly price.

Good but not perfect for our Bloemfontein team

Working well for our 25 person team

Sickness tracking showed us a pattern we had felt but never seen. Absence reporting surfaced patterns our gut had missed. Performance check ins are light but they happen, which beats heavy and skipped.

Let us down when it counted

It suited us at fifteen people and constrained us at fifty. A disciplinary process needs documentation this system cannot properly hold.
