Willem Nel

Operations Director · Ballito Pharmacy Group

22 January 2025

Healthcare · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

3 years in and still happy

Approvals for purchases route through Teams where people already are, so nothing waits. Inventory costing is finally real: FIFO where we need it, standard cost where we do not. New starters know Outlook and Excel already, so the learning curve is gentler than the last ERP. The Microsoft ecosystem does half the selling and the product does the rest.

Pros

Scales without replatforming; approvals inside Teams and Outlook

23 October 2024

South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Our 160 user rollout landed on time and on budget

Powerful, Microsoft flavoured, and priced accordingly. Getting SA specific bank integration working needed a third party connector. Multi company means our two entities close in the same afternoon.

Pros

Multi company consolidation

Good but not perfect for our Paarl team

Powerful, Microsoft flavoured, and priced accordingly. Some screens feel heavy and a warehouse clerk notices the clicks. Multi company means our two entities close in the same afternoon.

Pros

Dimensions beat cost centre hacks

Cons

Partner hours are part of the cost

Manufacturing · 11–50 employees Botswana Used for 1–2 years

Happy customer in eMalahleni

Team Members licences at a fraction of the price cover all the approve and view users. The AppSource marketplace had a payroll connector and an EDI add on ready to go. For SA mid market businesses the shortlist should start here.

Pros

Scales without replatforming

Cons

Heavy screens for warehouse work

Partner quality is everything and ours was not

We bought an ERP and inherited a consulting relationship we cannot exit. Training the floor staff took months longer than the plan admitted.

Cons

Change requests for simple things

CFO · Kalahari Manufacturing SA

7 July 2026

Manufacturing · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for Less than 6 months

Implementation ran away from the quote

For our size the overhead never justified itself. A partner developer left and took the knowledge of our customisations with him. Go live slipped twice and the fees for the slippage landed on us.

Cons

Change requests for simple things

Serving our Johannesburg operation well

Power BI dashboards read the live data, so our exco pack builds itself overnight. Uptime has been effectively perfect for 2 years.

Pros

Monthly updates, no upgrade projects; multi company consolidation

Food & Beverage · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Mostly happy in Bloemfontein, a few gripes

We are happy on it, though the total cost of ownership needed explaining to the board. Some screens feel heavy and a warehouse clerk notices the clicks.

Pros

Proper inventory costing methods; power BI reads live data natively

Cons

Licensing model takes study

Food & Beverage · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Good but not perfect for our Gqeberha team

We are happy on it, though the total cost of ownership needed explaining to the board. The out of the box reports are average, Power BI is where reporting actually happens. Bank reconciliation with imported statements is quick and the matching learns.

Pros

Monthly updates, no upgrade projects; one ledger across finance, stock and sales

Cons

SA bank feeds need connectors

The demo hid the real complexity

For our size the overhead never justified itself. The per user cost at 130 users makes the CFO wince quarterly.

Cons

Budget overruns with shared blame

Our accountant in Umhlanga recommended it, good call

The monthly release cadence means we get improvements without upgrade projects. Dimensions replaced our old cost centre hacks with something the auditors actually praised.

Healthcare · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Mostly happy in Pietermaritzburg, a few gripes

After 7 years the verdict is positive with real footnotes. Getting SA specific bank integration working needed a third party connector. The AppSource marketplace had a payroll connector and an EDI add on ready to go.

Pros

Power BI reads live data natively

Cons

Licensing model takes study

Mining · 11–50 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Not what we hoped for our Mossel Bay business

Our implementation doubled its budget and the blame had many parents. The per user cost at 12 users makes the CFO wince quarterly.

Cons

Partner dependency with no easy exit

Customisations complicated every update

For our size the overhead never justified itself. Simple changes need a change request, a quote and a fortnight. The per user cost at 55 users makes the CFO wince quarterly.

Pros

Dimensions beat cost centre hacks

Cons

Per user pricing stings at scale. Partner dependency with no easy exit

Good but not perfect for our Ballito team

A genuinely strong ERP that demands respect during implementation. Inventory costing is finally real: FIFO where we need it, standard cost where we do not.

Pros

Two way Excel integration; appSource marketplace for add ons

Decent fit for a 28 person company

It does everything, which means deciding what it should do took months. The licensing matrix took our IT manager a weekend to truly understand. Getting SA specific bank integration working needed a third party connector.

Cons

Partner hours are part of the cost

Manufacturing · 51–200 employees South Africa Used for 1–2 years

Our 180 user rollout landed on time and on budget

The monthly release cadence means we get improvements without upgrade projects. New starters know Outlook and Excel already, so the learning curve is gentler than the last ERP. It is the last ERP decision we plan to make for a decade.

Pros

Power BI reads live data natively; strong SA partner channel

Doing okay for our 160 person setup

We are happy on it, though the total cost of ownership needed explaining to the board. Performance dips at month end when everyone hammers the same ledgers. Multi company means our two entities close in the same afternoon.

Pros

Two way Excel integration

Cons

Premium versus Essentials is a hard call

Good but not perfect for our Worcester team

Very capable once configured, and configuring took longer than promised. The licensing matrix took our IT manager a weekend to truly understand. Every module posts to one ledger so the numbers agree by construction.

Pros

Approvals inside Teams and Outlook

Cons

SA bank feeds need connectors
