Retail · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 6–12 months

Solid choice for our Boksburg business

I run payroll for 50 client companies from one login and the unlimited companies pricing makes my whole practice model work. It posts the salary journals through to Sage Accounting automatically. If you are still installing payroll updates, you are working too hard.

Pros

No installs, no update downloads, ever; leave management included

Doing okay for our 15 person setup

Mostly a pleasure, occasionally a shrug.

Pros

Unlimited companies and users on every tier

Cons

Perfect for a small Vereeniging employer

It handles the common cases beautifully and the uncommon ones not at all. Reporting is thin, beyond the standard set you export and build it yourself. The audit trail shows who changed what, useful with two admins.

Cons

Employee self service is basic

R90 a month to pay two staff properly

It handles the common cases beautifully and the uncommon ones not at all. Reporting is thin, beyond the standard set you export and build it yourself. PAYE, UIF and SDL are always current with SARS because the cloud updates itself.

Cons

Ticket support can take days

Legal · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Simple, current and always compliant

I run payroll for 20 client companies from one login and the unlimited companies pricing makes my whole practice model work. Every plan includes unlimited companies and users, which is unheard of at this price. Payroll went from monthly dread to a fifteen minute task.

Pros

Real time payslip calculations

Cons

Employee self service is basic

Serving our Somerset West operation well

The demo company convinced me before I loaded a single real employee. The ACB file loads into Nedbank business banking and the whole run pays in one batch. For the price there is nothing to think about.

Cons

Session timeouts during long captures

Serving our George operation well

Our accountant has her own access, checks the run monthly and we never email files around. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly cycles run side by side cleanly.

Pros

Free 30 day demo company

Good but not perfect for our Vanderbijlpark team

Good simple product, just know its limits before committing. The browser session times out faster than I would like mid capture. There is no proper costing split if staff work across departments.

Cons

Employee self service is basic

Exactly what our 8 person business needed

The pay run is a guided checklist, I literally cannot forget a step. It works fine on my phone browser when I am away from the desk. The leave module means my staff request days in the app, not in the passage.

Perfect for a small Ballito employer

For a micro business in Bloemfontein the entry price makes proper payroll a no brainer. Perfect for bookkeepers with a stable of small clients.

Pros

ACB bank files for the major banks

Real Estate · 1–10 employees South Africa Used for 2+ years

Working well for our 6 person team

Moved off desktop payroll in July and the year end was suddenly a non event. IRP5s at year end were generated without me touching a settings screen. You can preview a payslip before finalising, mistakes get caught early. Small business payroll finally done the modern way.

Pros

Real time payslip calculations

Perfect for a small Paarl employer

Mostly a pleasure, occasionally a shrug. You cannot customise the payslip layout much at all. The EMP201 figures are on screen when I need them for eFiling.

Pros

ACB bank files for the major banks

Cons

No department cost splitting

Mostly happy in Knysna, a few gripes

Mostly a pleasure, occasionally a shrug. The employee self service is more basic than the marketing suggests. IRP5s at year end were generated without me touching a settings screen.

Cons

Complex pay structures do not fit well

8 years in and still happy

My bookkeeper set it up remotely in an afternoon and handed me a working payroll. You can preview a payslip before finalising, mistakes get caught early. Cannot imagine going back to desktop payroll now.

Our accountant in Umhlanga recommended it, good call

Serving our Worcester operation well

The real time calculation shows me the net pay effect before I commit anything. The tiers by headcount are clear, you always know what growth will cost. I recommend it to every small employer who asks me.

Solid for SMEs, big companies should look elsewhere

Happy after 2 years but the feature gaps are taking long to close. You cannot customise the payslip layout much at all. The browser session times out faster than I would like mid capture.

Pros

Clear headcount based pricing in rand; real time payslip calculations

Cons

Reporting beyond the standard set is thin

Doing the job for us in Johannesburg

After years of annual licence maths, paying by headcount monthly feels honest. It works fine on my phone browser when I am away from the desk. Honestly the easiest software decision we made this year.

Cons

Complex pay structures do not fit well

A quiet workhorse for 2 years now

Tax changes land in the product overnight and I never install anything. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly cycles run side by side cleanly. Loading our history from the old system went better than expected. If you are still installing payroll updates, you are working too hard.

Pros

No installs, no update downloads, ever; clear headcount based pricing in rand

Cons

Needs a stable internet connection

Happy after 2 years but the feature gaps are taking long to close. The browser session times out faster than I would like mid capture. Complex pay structures with multiple rate tables just do not fit.
